We recently took a trip to Sky Top Orchard in Flat Top, NC. This slow cooker recipe for Apple Butter was a result of the fruits of our labor. These go great with any homemade bread or toast. We enjoy them on these yeast biscuits.

Yields 4
Delicious Apple Butter made in your slow cooker / crock pot.
Prep Time
30 min
Cook Time
11 hr
Ingredients
- 6½-7 pounds apples, peeled, cored and sliced (I used a combination of Fuji, Jonagold, Red Delicious, and Golden delicious that we picked at Sky Top Orchard in Flat Rock NC)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups apple cider
- 1/4 Cup Lemon Juice
Instructions
- Place the apples, apple cider, and lemon juice in slow cooker / crock pot. In a medium bowl, whisk together the spices (sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt). Sprinkle over the apples and stir gently to combine. Cook on low for 10 hours.
- After the 10 hours in the crock pot stir in vanilla extract, breaking up any large chunks of apples that remain with a whisk or fork.
- Transfer the apple mush over to a blender and give it a blend for a few seconds to smooth out the texture. You could also use an immersion blender while the soon-to-be apple butter is still in the crock pot.
- Pour the blended apples into a large pot and bring to a boil on your stove. We have now officially finished using the crock pot. Cook on stove top for 1 hour at med-high heat (between 6-7 on my oven) stirring every 5-10 minutes. The longer you cook it the thicker the final product will become.
- Proceed to eat all of it. Or, you could can it.
